Thia undertaking was given by the Councils ing the first week of the strike, when its early termination was expected. As the negotiations dragged on and agree- ment after agreement, was wrecked, my French-c#33@sgpG and I did not fail to point out that the result would be very different from what it might have been had the strike ended when the undertaking waa firat given, Chinese however always waved this point aside as of no importance and asserted that a fund would be raised to compensate those employees who were not paid in full.
